I am writing today to ask you to support the Matt Morgan Campaign for Michigan District 1.
There are three reasons I’m supporting this campaign: Matt’s character, his commitment to the issues I feel strongly about, and his courage to act on his commitment.
Character:
The first question we should be asking about our leader is “What is the strength of their character?”
It’s the foundation of any effective leader. In voting for a politician, I believe we need to weigh multiple values in making our decision.
One-value-voting is simply not sufficient.
Matt embodies the values of freedom, decency, equality, honesty, integrity, respect, inclusion, trustworthiness, interdependence, and quality. He is clearly a man of strong character.
Commitment:
There are several key issues in this campaign. For me, the chart below summarizes the key positions of both candidates in this campaign.
Matt Morgan | Jack Bergman | |
Abortion | Pro-choice | Anti-choice |
Environment | Pro EPA and science | Anti EPA and anti-science |
Education | Strong public education | More privatization and vouchers |
Civil Rights | Equal rights and voting opportunities for minorities and the LGBT community | Voter suppression, gerrymandering, against LBGT rights |
Economy | Labor and tax policies that reduce income inequality and strengthen the middle class, thereby encouraging sustainable economic growth | Voted for a trillion-dollar corporate tax handout that gave big banks a tax break at the expense of middle class families |
Health Care | High quality, accessible, and affordable care which includes expanding health insurance coverage and supporting rural health care providers. | Reverse the Affordable Care Act |
Infrastructure | High speed internet access for all, a new Soo Lock, funding for roads and bridges. | Minimal funding |
Matt has made strong commitments to all of the issues in the chart. You may have additional issues that are more important to you. Please go to www.mattmorganformichigan.com to find position statements on those issues or call the campaign office.
Courage:
We need politicians who will stand up to power, stand for principles, and speak up for our kids. Matt is a 20-year Marine veteran who served two tours of duty in Iraq. There is no question about his courage.
I have total confidence that Matt will stand up to abuses of power and to slick maneuvers to push through legislation that benefits special interest groups more than the country as a whole. I have no doubts that Matt will stand for foundational principles and do the right thing. He will not overlook gross misbehavior to advance a pet idea.
I am firmly convinced that Matt will speak up for our kids and the future of this country and its host planet.
Matt and Angie have two young children who inspire them every day to do what is necessary to provide a safe and healthy environment for them and all children.
I’m inspired by Matt’s campaign because he has the character, the commitment, and the courage to represent us well.
I hope you will join me in supporting his campaign as generously as you possibly can. I believe my support for Matt is the best investment possible for our future. I hope you will as well.
Please understand that this campaign is bigger than Michigan District 1.
Here are the facts:
- All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election on November 6.
- 50 of those seats have been deemed to be competitive—all the rest are locked in either blue or red.
- Democrats need a net 24 swing in the House to re-take the majority
- District 1 is one of the 50 possibilities and could represent that critical 24th seat.
While I’m asking you to support Matt in his campaign, your contribution could help us re-take the house.
We are literally in a fight for our lives in this nation.
A fight to protect the constitution. A fight to restore America’s leadership role in the world. A fight to re-establish norms of civility and decency.
A fight to check the destructive policies of the Trump administration regarding the environment, education, the economy, civil rights, immigration, energy, and on and on.
I’m asking you to join in the campaign for the 24 seats we need to return to some semblance of sanity. This is about stopping the insanity. Please give. I’m making this personal appeal for you to join me. I can assure you that I am all-in.
